organisation profile

The Institute for Biogeochemistry and Marine Chemistry, founded in June 1989, is part of the Centre for Marine and Climate Research at the University of Hamburg. Central research topic of the Institute is the study of interactions and biogeochemical cycling of elements in the compartments lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. The dynamic processes of these cycles are investigated under natural as well as anthropogenically affected conditions and at different scales of time and space. The results obtained from these studies on the controlling processes and the variability of element cycling are used for predictions, i.e., for an evaluation of the effects on possible climate changes Three fields of research are principally covered by the Institute: biogeochemistry, organic geochemistry and marine geology. The research projects are financed by the Federal Ministry of Education, Research and Technology, the German Research Council and the European Union, and carried out in national and international cooperation
