organisation profile
The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR = Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe) is the central geoscientific authority providing advice to the German Federal Government in all geo-relevant questions. It is subordinate to the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi).
Activities of BGR include:
- BGR North Sea mapping project since 2002. The main aims of the project are: (i) high-resolution geological mapping of the near-surface substratum/bedrock, and (ii) the compilation of digitally available geological maps.
- Type of geodata managed by BGR: compilation of all available geophysical & geological data sets/samples including industry multichannel seismic, BGR high-resolution multi-channel seismic, highest-resolution multi-channel-seismic of the University of Bremen, shallow seismic (Boomer, Sparker, CHIRP and Innomar sediment echosounder lines), bathymetry (Simrad EM710), vibrocores (6 m), scientific cores (max 200 m), palaeontologic samples, peat dating, OSL dating.
- Expertise: actual mapping project since more than 5 years, continuation of earlier projects e.g. “EU Southern North Sea project” (Streif 1996) and “Geotektonischer Atlas” (Baldschuhn et al. 2001), BGR performs the complete workflow including geophysical data acquisition and seabed sampling, processing, analyses (14C, OSL, etc.), interpretation and conditioning for GIS systems.
- Projects involved: BGR mapping project itself, new initiative “Geopotenzial Deutsche Nordsee” together with the LBEG (= geological Survey of Lower Saxony) and the industry (windpower, hydrocarbon), GGA ('Leibniz Institute for Applied Geosciences', or 'Institut für Geowissenschaftliche Gemeinschaftsaufgaben') performs OSL and 14C dating, relations to University of Bremen projects (Mörz / Spiess), the University of Kiel, and other research institutions, international relations with the Geological Surveys of the UK, The Netherlands, and Denmark.
