organisation profile
The Institute operates in the field of brackish-water and marine aquaculture related to the ecological aspects of coastal zone management. The main activities and research works are carried out on the artificial reproduction and larval rearing of many aquatic species, i.e. sea bass, gilthead bream, sole, eel, mullets, shrimps, molluscs, algae (micro- and macroalgae and Rotifer). Other research programmes are concerned with scientific studies on the dynamics of populations of biological and economical marine species ascending the coastal lagoons, in order to consider its biological resources. Particular observations are carried out in the Southern Adriatic Sea, Gargano Promontory, on the eutrophication phenomena of lagoons and seawater areas by monitoring marine currents, phytoplankton quantity and quality, bacteriological aspects, concentration of dissolved nutrients, biotic and abiotic parameters. The methodological approach includes:
a) Standard and special data collection procedures; and
b) Management and processing of measured data.
The data held by the institute are subject to different availability: the data collected in the framework of ordinary scientific programmes (Regions, Ministry) are of restricted availability awaiting special permission by customers. Several publications or data sets collected in the past we are in a position to freely exchange with our colleagues.
