organisation profile
The Water Quality Department, of the Water Research Institute, operates in the fields of limnology and oceanography in order to acquire physical, chemical and biological information and data to be used to describe the behaviour and the effects of pollutants introduced into water bodies. The investigations are carried out both in freshwater, rivers and lakes, and in marine waters, coastal areas affected by important pollution sources. The main goals of the research carried out in collaboration with other public and private Institutions are:
a) the development and diffusion at national level of analytical methods and sampling strategies;
b) the determination of water quality of different water bodies;
c) the development of procedures for evaluating the level of toxicity and the eutrophizing capacity;
d) the definition of strategies for protecting sea water from the in-sea discharge of contaminants of different origins;
e) the design and implementation of information systems for water resources management.
Studies carried out in the Adriatic Sea are principally concerned with the coastal areas affected by the Po river diffusion plume. The data collected are diffused in national and international publications or can be exchanged by special arrangement with the scientists involved in the original collection
