- Odessa National I.I. Mechnikov University (the ONU) is one of the oldest universities in Ukraine. It was founded in 1865 according to an Edict of Alexander II, Russian Emperor. From the very first years of its existence the University of Novorossiya (now – the ONU) became an important center of science and education of research and lecturing staff in the Northern Black Sea Region. Nowadays the University consists of 12 faculties, 3 Educational Institutes and 2 Educational Centres. At present, the University teaches 20000 students from Ukraine and other countries of the former USSR, as well as 700 students from 52 foreign countries. Students of the University receive deep fundamental knowledge in basic sciences and serious professional training in specialities chosen by them. Scientific researches are conducted by 3 Scientific-research Institutes, 3 Research Centres and 11 Scientific-Research Laboratories studying branch science issues. The marine researches implemented with involved scientists from following units of the University:
- Regional Centre for Integrated Environmental Monitoring and Ecological Studies
- Faculty of Geography and Geology
- Faculty of Biology - Department of Information Technology
The ONU has research marine station on the Zmiinyi Island in the Black sea near the Danube Delta which carries out regular monitoring including hydrological, hydrochemical, hydrobiological and other observations. The main fields of marine investigations: geology, hydrobiology, hydrology, hydrochemistry, ecology, microbiology etc.
