organisation profile

GEOMAR, Research Center for Marine Geosciences at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, pursues basic marine environmental research in the broadest sense. Its research themes include past and present natural and anthropogenic processes which control the origin, composition, and structure of sediments and magmatic rocks of the seafloor. The research focus, which unites the four departments of Marine Geodynamics, Volcanology and Petrology, Paleoceanology, and Marine Environmental Geology, is charcterised by ist gloal perspective and integrated approach towards understanding of geomarine geoprocesses. Scientists of the four departments are jointly aiming to better predict the natural variability of atmospheric, oceanic, and lithospheric material fluxes controlled by plate tectonics and affected by anthropogenic activity. Hence, on a global scale, climate variability, sea-level change and natural hazards, such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are among the major research themes.
