The ENEA unit UTAPRAD at Frascati carries out research, innovation and technology transfer, through the implementation of technologies for the application of ionizing radiation and the development of particle accelerators and systems, micro-and nanostructures for optoelectronics and photonics, also dealing with the mathematical modeling of physical phenomena related to the technology development pursued.
The research and development mainly concern:
- Systems for generating ionizing and non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, including tunable lasers, free electron lasers (FEL) at Terahertz frequencies of the sources of soft X-rays by FEL and plasma and its applications in imaging, anti-counterfeiting, diagnostics for the environment and cultural heritage, and in the field of security.
- Accelerators of particles (protons, electrons) for industrial and medical applications, including the development of free electron lasers.
- Advanced Mathematical Methods in classical and quantum optics, for modeling the transport of charged particle beams, to study of complex systems, including biological systems.
- Micro-components and nano-structures for optoelectronics and nano-bio- photonics with scientific and industrial applications, and for the use in energy production systems.
- Spectroscopic and optical systems for diagnostic and metrological systems (lidar) aimed at in situ and remote characterization of terrestrial and marine environment and cultural heritage, for Safety and Health; miniaturized systems for land applications, even in hostile environments for 'planetary exploration’. Imaging systems for marine and brackish water monitoring, the activity including analysis and integration of data collected by using multi-sensor systems. Integration of marine lidar data with satellite imagery is along the latter research line.
